NightShift ("the Extension") is a free, open Chrome browser extension that applies dark mode filters, colour adjustments, and reading enhancements to websites you visit. It is developed and maintained by j@brutal.net.
This policy explains what data the Extension accesses, how it is used, and where it is stored. The short answer is: all processing happens locally on your device and nothing is ever sent to us or any third party.
We collect no data whatsoever.
NightShift does not collect, transmit, store on remote servers, or share any personal information, browsing history, or usage data. There are no analytics, no telemetry, no error reporting, and no usage statistics sent anywhere.
The Extension requests the following Chrome permissions. Each one is used solely to provide local functionality:
chrome.storage.sync. Sync storage replicates your settings across your own Chrome devices if you're signed in to Chrome. No third party ever sees this data.Your settings — brightness, contrast, sepia, presets, whitelist, custom CSS, schedule — are stored using Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.sync API.
If you are signed in to Google Chrome, this storage is synced across your own devices by Google. This sync is controlled entirely by Chrome and Google's privacy policy — NightShift has no access to, visibility into, or control over that sync process.
If you are not signed in to Chrome, settings are stored locally only and never leave your device.
NightShift does not integrate with, communicate with, or share data with any third-party services, APIs, analytics platforms, or advertising networks.
There are no external network requests made by the Extension at any time.
NightShift does not collect any data from anyone, including children. The Extension is suitable for all ages.
If this policy changes in a meaningful way — for example if a future version adds any form of data collection — the policy will be updated with a new date and the change will be noted clearly. We will never introduce data collection silently.
